How do you honor your aging parents wish to age at home and still sleep at night?
Visiting the Folks this Holiday Season? Things to look for which are danger signals
Can a care manager help my folks? Case Study: The adult children of Mr and Mrs R have tried to abide by their parents wishes to age @ home. That is until their father ended up in the hospital with a stroke. From there it was reccommended that he go to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation. But who would take care of mom while dad continued to recover? The kids knew mom had memory problems but the extent of her dementia was covered by dad's tender loving care. Now the children were faced with decisions regarding how to care for both their parents! Their family attorney referred them to Age @ Home and Kathy Randall, Elder Care Manager. Ms Randall assessed Mr. R at the hospital and then met with Mrs. R for an in home assessment. Individual treatment plans for both parents were developed with the goal to keep them both safely at home. She presented her findings at a family conference attended by the children. Ms. Randall secured caregivers for Mrs. R while Mr. R recovered at the skilled facility. Home Health Care was brought in to transition Mr. R back home. The caregivers continued after Mr. R came home. Mrs. R got the dementia treatment she needed to slow the progression of the disease. The children divided up responsiblities and sought input from the care manager as bumps in the road appeared. Two years later the parents are thriving and still at home with the support of the 'care team'; the kids, the care manager and their caregivers!
